Fridge Monster

Writing and illustrating your first book must be the hardest, right?

Maybe not, but it certainly isn’t easy. There are sooooo many children’s books out there. I’ve read hundreds to my kids over the years, and that doesn’t even scratch the surface. Is there even room for more children’s books? The competition is fierce, and unless you’re a celebrity, it seems the chances of your book being a success are slim at best.

But, I don’t care, I’m writing and illustrating one anyway. Hopefully more than one (but let’s not get ahead of ourselves).

My first children’s book is going to be about ‘something’ that lives in a family’s fridge.

Writing my first children’s book

The original name I had for the book was ‘Something’s in our fridge’ but I changed it for the more punchy title of ‘Fridge Monster’.

The story has changed a few times since my original idea. Initially it was all about a little boy who found a penguin and secretly kept it in his fridge, and then it changed and the penguin just appeared and was hiding in the fridge. Now you can forget the penguin, he’s gone.

I’ve already written, re-written and re-re-written the story over several years. It feels I’ve come a fair way along the journey, only to come back to my latest draft and realise it’s still not quite where I want it to be. I guess that’s ‘normal’ and just the way it has to be. Hopefully another few tweaks and I’ll be just about there.

After that it’s the easy bit of illustrating the whole thing! That’s going to take me ages too.

I want to keep updating things here, but obviously I can’t put too many details (because the internet is full of thieving degenerates). I’ll add what I think is useful. Please don’t steal.
